Weekly Update 7/27/09

I am doing great. We had a baptism on Saturday. It was awesome. Now we are going to try baptize the dad since he is interested in what his daughter is doing with her life.

Let me give everyone some advice. If you are going to go on a vacation to Florida...don’t. Ha ha, just kidding. Just don’t come in the summer or the fall because it is so hot here.

This week is bike week (we trade off–one week we have the car, one week we use our bikes) So this week I’ve lost ten pounds of pure sweat, no joke. It is gross.

Well, this week we had a lot of rejection. We did find one guy at the beach and he was interested. Too bad he lives in New Jersey. One of the Elders in my district at the MTC went to that part of New Jersey. So, I passed his information on to that Elder and hopefully he will get to talk to him.

Well that’s last week. We are looking forward to the next one with high hopes.

July 20 Update

The mission president sent us this picture of Elder Nielson's first day in Florida (July 7, 2009)

Dear Fellow Americans,

I am doing good. It is getting really stormy. The lightning is awesome here.

Well this Saturday is the first baptism I have. Her name is Justine and she has been going to church for three years. Her dad wouldn’t let her get baptized until she waited a year. The year is up now and she is getting baptized.

We are going to see an old man today. He is pretty cool and we are going to convert him...I hope. I am doing well but the heat is still destroying me. I am a missionary though so I can do it. We shall see.

Well, I hope everything at home has been good. It’s been a month and it’s rockin!!!

Week Three

July 13, 2009

Jeff has asked that all mail be sent to the mission office. The missionaries change addresses frequently and mail will not be forwarded to new addresses. To make sure he gets the mail, please send it to the mission office at:

Hello everyone. I am in Florida and am sweating from the heat as I sit here. It’s going pretty good. The missionaries who were here before me were kind of lazy and didn’t do anything. So, I’ve been tracting for the past five days all day. I do have an investigator and we will commit him to baptism on Friday, so that’s pretty cool. Other than that though there’s not much going on here yet.

I am in a place called Palm Harbor but it’s really close to Tampa Bay. It is about a ten minute drive from the beach. My companion is Elder Firth. He is from Idaho and I am older than him, surprise, surprise. I am doing great. If you want my address or anything, ask my mom. (See address above.)

Oh, I am living with a member and she is a crazy French lady but she is really nice so it’s okay. Plus she likes to watch movies. So, as I walk to the bathroom, I get a peak. You can imagine I go to the bathroom a lot.

Well, I am safe in Florida and no one has shot me yet so yeah...Elder Nielson

July 2 Update

Hello again. It’s week two. I leave for Florida on Monday at 6:00 am so I’m getting really excited for that. As wonderful a place as this is, I can’t wait to leave.

I saw my 8th grade teacher here today. (Mrs. Brinkerhoff is serving a mission too.) It was pretty cool.

I am doing good in case anyone was worried. The food is still sucky but hey that’s ok :). I have a cool story. I was at the referral center getting inbound calls and it was so slow and so boring. Then someone called and I was ready. It was a 65 year old lady. It turns out it was a wrong number so she said sorry and I asked in a depressed kind of voice if she would listen to what I had to say anyway. She said sure. So I started talking and teaching her about the church. I talked her into receiving a Book of Mormon from the missionaries. It was pretty awesome. I committed her to go to church on Sunday, to start reading the Book of Mormon and to pray to know that it was true. So now I can say that I pretty much converted her. It was cool.

Elder Jeffrey R Holland came and talked with us on Friday. That was good. We saw President Monson and two other general authorities. I got a picture of President Monson leading a crowd of missionaries in singing "We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet." It was the best.

Other than that I have just been studying ALL THE TIME!!!! Well good luck to everyone that is swimming in red, white, and blue... and happy 4th of July.

Elder Jeff
